Charleston Shopping and Districts

(Charleston, West Virginia - WV, USA)

If you are coming to Charleston with shopping on your mind, then there are plenty of opportunities for retail therapy in this small state capital.

For clothing and all kinds of fashion accessories, the city center is the place to come. Take a stroll along thoroughfares such as Hale Street, Quarrier Street and Virginia Street, the latter two of which lead towards the shopping paradise that is the Charleston Town Center Mall.

The Town Center is an enclosed mall conveniently located in downtown Charleston, where it is bounded by Clendenin Street, Lee Street East, Court Street and Quarrier Street. Interestingly, this is actually one of the largest indoor shopping malls to stand within a downtown district, being home to more than 120 shops, services and restaurants, which are spread over three floors and open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 until 21:00, and on Sundays between 12:30 and 18:00.

Where to Shop

The Charleston Town Center has been the capital's principal shopping destination since it opened in the winter of 1983, as part of an ambitious project to revitalize the downtown district.

The first two floors are where you will find the shops, which include names such as Bath and Body Works, the Children's Place, Christopher and Banks, JC Penney, Macy's, Payless Shoes, Sears and Spencer Gifts. The third floor is reserved for the food court, where eateries include Sbarro Pizza, Steak Escape and Taco Bell.

If you've had your fill of the Charleston Town Center and are looking for an alternative, then you may like to head southeast along MacCorkle Avenue to the recently redeveloped Shops at Kanawha shopping complex, where there are around 20 different shops and eateries.

To the west of downtown Charleston, the Kanawha Boulevard connects the Patrick Street Plaza Shopping Center, where KMart is one of the main stores based here in this small grouping.

More central is the Plaza East Shopping Center on Lewis Street, which is to be found right next to the Appalachian Power Park and is known for its home furnishings and little more. Further afield and roughly 15 minutes to the southwest of downtown Charleston, the Southridge area offers further shopping opportunities, in the form of the Dudley Farms Plaza, the Shops at Trace Fork and also the Southridge Center, where a Marque Cinemas complex regularly screens the latest movies.
