Seattle Churches and Cathedrals

Seattle is known for its two beautiful cathedrals, Saint James and Saint Mark's, together with many churches and chapels. The centrally located Saint James Cathedral serves as the city's principal Roman Catholic church and was built between the years of 1905 and 1907, being located just a couple of blocks away from Seattle's Town Hall and the Bakke Graduate University.

Head to the north, via Madison Street and Broadway East, and you will soon find Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, close to Volunteer Park, the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Lake View Cemetery.

Saint Mark's functions as the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia and was dedicated in 1931. However, the parish was unable to clear its debts and the building was taken over by the United States Army during WWII. The cathedral finally reopened soon after, when its mortgage debts were cleared and the relevant documentation burned in front of the parish, as part of the Palm Sunday celebrations.

This is the city's Catholic cathedral and also features impressive views of the cityscape, the waterfront and the surrounding area. Other attractions include a gift shop and frequent seasonal events, which are generally of a religious nature.
