Montpelier Museums

(Montpelier, Vermont - VT, USA)

If you would like to find out all about how the city of Montpelier began its life and grew to become the state capital of today, then there really is only one place to come - the Vermont Historical Society Museum on State Street.

Visitors will find a series of themed exhibits, based around questions such as 'Who are Vermonters?' and 'How do we establish a democratic society?'

The Vermont Historical Society Museum is to be found on the first floor of the Pavilion Building, where it stands alongside Montpelier's magnificent State House, as well as being right next to the Supreme Court and the State Treasurer. Just down the road is the Capitol Plaza Hotel and Conference Center, along with the Capitol Theater and the US Post Office.

The building itself is of particular interest, since it is not as old as it first appears. Actually built in the 1970s, the Pavilion is a modern reconstruction of an elegant French-style hotel dating from the 1870s and features office space for the Vermont Governor.

This institution serves as an interesting cultural attraction, suiting those looking to find out more about the city's bygone days. Founded all the way back in the late 1830s, the Vermont Historical Society (VHS) is a not-for-profit organization that was established in order to both record and conserve the heritage, archives and historical artifacts relating to this US state.

The principal award-winning exhibit is named 'Freedom and Unity - One Ideal, Many Stories' and provides something of a timeline for this state capital, stretching from the year 1600 right up to the present-day. Highlights include an authentic wigwam, an accurate recreation of a period railway station and tavern, and a fully furnished living room set in the period of the Second World War. There is also a museum shop onsite selling books, postcards, maps and a number of souvenirs relating to both the city of Montpelier and the state of Vermont.
Open hours: Tuesday to Saturday - 10:00 to 16:00
