A wander around downtown Montpelier will reveal a number of attractions for tourists on vacation in the Vermont capital.

Standing just down the road from St. Augustine's Catholic Church, the Savoy Theater is a small arts cinema located on Main Street, in between Blanchard Court and Barre Street. The Lost Nation Theater is another cultural draw card and is sited within the City Hall Auditorium Arts Center.

If the sun is shining and you are looking for some outdoor tourist attractions and fun, then consider an afternoon out at the Montpelier Recreation Field. Alternatively, take a tour of the Morse Farm Sugar Works, a 200-year-old family business, and taste its sweet nectar.

The Morse Farm Sugar Works is an unusual tourist attraction lying on the northeastern side of Montpelier. A visit here is a real must if you are a fan of maple syrup, with maple creemees (soft-serve ice cream) being a major draw, along with the bottles of syrup and some impressive views from the patio areas. Visitors will be able to learn about the syrup-making process by watching a video presentation in the Woodshed Theater, as well as getting the opportunity to sample the different grades of syrup that can be purchased in the Sugar Shack, where lots of Vermont souvenirs and an enormous assortment of cookie cutters are sold. If you visit towards the end of the year, you will be able to enjoy spectacular fall colors, although it is often worth avoiding peak times, since regular tourist buses are known to stop off here and it can become rather crowded at these times.

Lost Nation Theater

The Lost Nation Theater began its life in the late 1980s and regularly stages all kinds of different shows, which include plays, musicals and comedy events. During the summer months, there are also week-long summer camps, which nurture the acting abilities of youngsters and incorporate a combination of music, dance, improvisation, costumes and art.

Savoy Theater

This movie theater tends to screen mainly independent films, and some foreign subtitled films and movies of an alternative nature. In total there is seating for audiences of up to 130 people and two screens (one is much smaller), as well as refreshments and various special events, such as the Green Mountain Film Festival each March and Sci-Fi July, when the month is dedicated to science-fiction films. Particular highlights include the comfortable vintage-style seats and the buttery popcorn!

Recreation Field

At the Montpelier Recreation Field you can choose between a large open-air swimming pool, tennis courts, baseball diamonds and tables for picnicking. The sports fields are also used for American football, soccer and hockey, while the onsite Babe Ruth baseball field serves as the homeground for the collegiate Vermont Mountaineers. The biggest NECBL All-Star Game baseball games draw crowds of up to 4,000 people. During the summer months, various themed events and attractions are staged here, including barbecues, family fun days and moonlit swimming.
