Most visitors to Gatlinburg travel here by either their own car or a rental car, as public transportation options in Gatlinburg are not very convenient or regular. However, you can fly or catch a bus to Knoxville, from where you can travel to Gatlinburg by shuttle bus or hire car.

McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) / Arriving by Air

Just 45 miles / 72 km west of Gatlinburg, Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport is the nearest airport to the town. The airport is served by American Eagle, Comair, Continental Express, Delta, Northwest, United and US Air, and has daily scheduled flights to larger regional airports, such as Memphis (MEM). From the airport, you can either rent a car or take a shuttle to Gatlinburg.


Car Rental

All major car rental agencies are represented at Gatlinburg including Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, National and Thrifty. The roads in the area are safe, comfortable and well-maintained, and Gatlinburg is located at the main road entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where an SUV or another 4WD vehicle is recommended.

Buses and Coaches

Greyhound services run to Knoxville, from where you can either pick up your own rental car or take a shuttle to Gatlinburg. The town features a convenient trolley service that provides travel to the most popular tourist attractions around Gatlinburg, including Pigeon Forge.

Trains

There is no train service to Gatlinburg or Knoxville. Amtrak serves Nashville and Chattanooga, from where you can arrange alternative transportation to the town.

Taxis

A few companies offer taxi and limousine services in Gatlinburg. However, these are mainly callout vehicles that must be reserved in advance.
