Rhode Island State Capitol Building

Built between 1895 to 1904 at a cost of more than $3 million, the white-marble Rhode Island State Capitol is a spectacular structure and one of America's most impressive State Capitol buildings. With grand columns, imposing architecture and a central, self-supporting dome, the building itself measures 230 feet / 70 meters in length, and up to 330 feet / 100 meters high. Providence's Rhode Island State Capitol houses the offices of the governor, state chambers and the state archives, and self-guided tours are available.

An Ivy League college, Brown University in Providence is one of the premier tertiary institutions in the United States. Established in 1764, Brown University is the seventh oldest university in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The college has a thriving arts scene and the charming old 18th- and 19th-century buildings that dot College Hill are a delight to wander around, not to mention that they are virtually museums all on their own. There is always something going on at Providence's Brown University and the shopping, dining and nightspot attractions along Thayer Street are a must for those seeking some unique buys, great food and lively evening entertainment.

John Brown House

One of the oldest and best preserved historic buildings in Providence, John Brown House is a three-storey Georgian wonder that was built in 1786. This mansion and its stunning furnishings were the pride of the trader John Brown, who made his fortune trading goods from China and slaves. The building houses an extensive collection of attractions, including Townsend and Goddard furniture, fine paintings, Chinese art and some beautiful pieces of silverware. Brown donated part of his extensive land holdings to Providence University, which bears his name.

First Baptist Church in America

Built in the late 18th century, Providence's First Baptist Church in American is one of the most important landmarks in New England and one of the most magnificent Georgian buildings in America. Trinity Repertory Company

The Tony award-winning Trinity Repertory Company is located on Washington Street, in downtown Providence. This performing arts production company has been in operation since 1964 and puts on eight shows per season, consisting of dramas, musicals and comedies. Apart from professional productions, the Company also participates in a teaching program in conjunction with Brown University, and the performances are always of a very high standard and well worth experiencing.
