Oregon's proud state capital and the seat for Marion County, the city of Salem lies within the northwestern quadrant of the state and comes with a population of roughly 160,000 people. However, despite its status as capital, this populous means that the city is only actually Oregon's third-largest, with the number one and two spots going to Portland and Eugene, respectively.

The Willamette River roughly divides the city of Salem into two areas, with the eastern chunk being considerably larger than the rather modest westerly district. On the eastern side of Salem, the I-5 interstate runs north to Portland and south to Eugene.
