The three districts of Taos are tourist attractions in themselves, with their adobe theme and historic architecture. However, Taos has many specific tourist attractions worth seeing, including a wealth of museums and art galleries.

Popular tourist attractions in Taos include the Rio Grande Gorge and its famous bridge, and the scenic grounds of Kit Carson Park. Also, nearby Taos, the town of Cordova and the Truchas mountains are popular day trips.


Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

Those visiting Taos with a fear of heights, beware! The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge spans a narrow canyon a soaring 650 feet / 198 meters above the fast-flowing Rio Grande River. The views of the surrounding mountains and valleys are spectacular. Though most people opt to view the stunning scene from the bridge itself, ballooners regularly make morning flights out over the gorge and small plane pilots have been known to actually fly under the bridge itself.

Kit Carson Park

Kit Carson Park in Taos is named after the famous Western pioneer, who is now actually buried here. Covering around 32 acres / 13 hectares, additional attractions at the park include a number of other notable headstones, together with recreational areas, picnic spots and a playground for children.

Cordova

Located around 44 miles / 70 km, the town of Cordova is a popular excursion from Taos, with the journey lasting around one hour and 20 minutes. Cordova is full of history, with popular attractions including galleries filled with local wood carvings, and the beautiful Rio Chiquito Church.

Truchas

Truchas stands just 39 miles / 62 km from Taos and is dominated by the Truchas Peak, which towers around 13,000 feet / 3,960 meters. Home to a group of mountains, the Truchas area is also famous for being the location for Robert Redford's movie, 'The Milagro Beanfield War'. The journey from Taos to Truchas lasts approximately one hour and 15 minutes.
