Annapolis offers a number of museums which celebrate the city's rich heritage, colorful history and maritime past. Notable offerings here include the Annapolis Maritime Museum and the Banneker Douglas, both of which are worthy of a visit and come with a host of exhibitions, hands-on displays and important local Maryland relics.




Annapolis Maritime Museum

This volunteer-run museum aims to preserve and present artifacts and exhibits that represent the rich maritime history of Annapolis. Although damaged by Hurricane Isabel, the museum has been rebuilt and re-dedicated, and is once again open to the public. Among the highlights here are the Barge House, an unusual structure built from the remains of bay barges; and the Thomas Point Lighthouse Experience.

Banneker Douglas Museum

The Banneker Douglas Museum is dedicated to the rich history of African Americans in Annapolis. Named after famous black intellectuals, Benjamin Banneker and Frederick Douglas, it is the official repository of African American material culture in Maryland. This attraction houses a number of interesting exhibits including artifacts, photographs, art, documents and rare books, all of which relate to black life in Maryland. The building itself was the first black church established in the city and dates back to the 18th century.
