The laid-back city of New Orleans is to be found in the state of Louisiana, where it is the largest city, although Baton Rouge is actually the state capital. Located on the southeastern side of Louisiana, New Orleans lies on the southern side of Lake Pontchartrain and to the north of the Mississippi River. Many parts of the city are described in relation to both the lake and the river, such as 'lakeside' or 'riverside'.

Lake Cataouatche is sited to the south, being accompanied by the Jean Lafitte Preserve, the Salvador Wildlife Management Area and the Timken Wildlife Management Area. The Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge stands to the far east, while the Maurepas Swamp is to the west.

Centered around Jackson Square, the characterful French Quarter is filled with interest and known locally as the Vieux Carré. From here, if you head in a southwesterly direction you will soon reach New Orleans' Central Business District (CBD), bordered by Lee Circle (south) and Canal Street (north). Lafayette Square lies in this part of the city, as well as the Riverwalk Marketplace shopping center, which stands next to the river and close to the World Trade Center of New Orleans, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and the Convention Center Boulevard.

Close by, further neighborhoods of note include the historic Warehouse District, the Garden District, Uptown New Orleans and the Riverbend area, where many of the local university students choose to base themselves. Lying on the western side of the French Quarter, the Tremé District is an old African American neighborhood where you will find the popular Louis Armstrong Park, while down river is the gay capital, Faubourg Marigny, along with Bywater.
