International visitors tend to arrive in the Lexington area by air at Blue Grass International Airport (LEX) and from there take scheduled shuttle buses, which travel to and from the town center. Lexington can be easily reached from other parts of the country, by both public and private transport.

Direct Greyhound buses travel from Dulles International Airport (near Washington DC) to Lexington, departing several times a day. It is approximately a three-hour drive from Washington to Lexington. Three times a week, trains transport travelers from Washington to Staunton, Virginia, which is located around 30 miles / 48 km north of Lexington.


Blue Grass International Airport (LEX) / Arriving by Air

Lexington has a small airport that caters to mainly domestic flights, operated by six major carriers. Visitors can also fly into nearby Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), where flights come in from all around the world. Greyhound bus transport operates between Dulles and Lexington airports, with the travel time between the two terminals being about three hours by car.

Car Rental

Major car rental travel companies operate from Blue Grass International Airport, including Avis, Enterprise, National and Hertz, with some agencies also having offices downtown. Lexington can be reached via I-85 and the city is around 200 miles / 320 km southwest of Washington DC. North and south Lexington meet at the junction of I-65 and I-75.

Buses and Coaches

Departing several times daily is a direct bus service which provides travel to and from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Lexington. Open Road Tours operate services from Lexington's center, details of which can be found at the Visitors Center.

Trains

About 30 miles / 48 km north of Lexington on I-81 is an Amtrak rail station, which serves Staunton, Virginia. However, there is no public transportation available from the Amtrak station to Lexington.

Taxis

Taxi and limo travel is available at Blue Grass International Airport. The taxi information counter can be found outside the baggage claim area. Many cab companies are available from Lexington Airport and offer a convenient method of ground transport. For those who do not rent their own vehicle, taxis are an ideal mean of travel within the city.
