Lexington Neighborhoods, Locations and Districts

Located in the middle of the Bluegrass region lies Lexington, the second largest metropolitan area and city in Kentucky. Lexington is famously known as 'the horse capital of the world' and is home to the Kentucky Horse Park and Keeneland racecourse. The city of Lexington also features a number of notable districts and neighborhoods, full of popular shops and restaurants.

Visitors can enjoy the shopping scene in Lexington's central downtown district, with a range of malls and shops located in close proximity. Lexington's outer areas, neighborhoods and districts are also appealing, with numerous parks and ranches, as well as the American Saddlebred Museum and other cultural attractions.


Downtown District

Lexington's downtown district offers a handsome selection of restaurants, cafés and bars. There are selections of food, ranging from local specialties, such as spoon bread and country ham to delicate gourmet cooking. Triangle Square is a beautiful grassy park in downtown Lexington, with a landmark horseshoe-shaped fountain situated in the center. The University of Kentucky Basketball Museum at the Civic Center Downtown is also worth stopping at. Lexington's Victorian Square and Civic Center are popular places to shop in this district.

North Lexington District

Home to the exclusive Marriott Hotel, the northern part of Lexington is an elegant alternative to the downtown scene. The Mansion restaurant at Lexington's Marriott Griffin Gate is known for its beautiful ambiance and tasty meals. A short drive from the Marriott is The Horse Park, a worthy visit due to its variety of activities and beautiful surroundings.

University of Kentucky District

Situated in the center of Lexington is the University of Kentucky, which has an arboretum, medical center, children's hospital, research hospital and the Singletary Arts Center. Tours within the university can be arranged and offer and insight into the vibrant lifestyle of the university's students. Small cafés, bars and shops are scattered around the grounds. Lexington's university is also home to the Kentucky Wildcats, a top-ranking basketball team. Look out for exhibitions on display at the Arts Center.

West Lexington District

Farther west of the central downtown district in Lexington is Ashland, home of Henry Clay. With elegant grounds and quiet surroundings, taking a tour around the estate is a must. Historic landmarks and stunning homes also surround Ashland. Lined with a few old boutiques is Clay Avenue, just outside the residence. Also located nearby is Lexington's Bella Rose district, which offers high fashion outlets.
