Fort Lauderdale is a city with a deep and interesting history, and features a good selection of museums. Once home to the Native American Indian people known as the Seminoles, the city contains a number of museums dedicated to educating both locals and visitors about those aspects of its past that have helped to shape the character of Fort Lauderdale today.

Besides history, there is plenty of interactive fun to be found at Fort Lauderdale's Museum of Discovery and Science, which has become known for its 3D movies, 'Great Gravity Clock' and yearly Food and Wine Gala. There is also lots for car enthusiasts to see and enjoy at the Antique Car Museum, where you can take a stroll through automobile history.


Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum Okalee

Located within the nearby city of Clewiston, roughly 65 miles / 105 km to the west of the city, the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum is housed within three buildings and features a variety of displays chronicling the history of the Seminoles in South Florida towards the end of the 19th century. Visitors can learn about aspects of Seminole folklore, marriage rites and spiritualism, as well as day-to-day practices such as cooking, traveling and hunting. Displays at the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki also feature a range of genuine Seminole artifacts, including jewelry, footwear and various items of clothing. Also onsite are a number of lengthy nature trails, which may well appeal, since they lead to a living village.

Definitely one for all of the family, the Museum of Discovery and Science is a center dedicated to presenting visitors with fascinating and educational insights into aspects of nature and technology in the Fort Lauderdale and greater Florida area. This attraction contains over 200 exhibits, of which popular favorites include those containing indigenous wildlife, such as bats, sharks, snakes, iguanas and alligators. There is also a giant IMAX theater showing educational and fun programs at various intervals throughout the day.

A large collection of vintage and rare automobiles, car lovers visiting Tallahassee will enjoy the Antique Car Museum immensely. Home to fine examples such as award-winning Chevys, a 1931 Duesenberg, a one-off Ford Roadster, a 1913 CarNation Tourer, a 1956 T-Bird and two original Batmobiles, the museum makes for a great family day out.

The History Center is dedicated to preserving the past of the city with particular attention given to the Seminole period. Visitors will have the opportunity to peruse exhibits at their own leisure or to attend workshops and lectures for more in-depth analysis of historical matters. Guided tours of local historical sites on foot and by boat are also available during the week.

Originally the Old Dillard High School, the city's Old Dillard Cultural Arts Museum is a relatively new addition to the city's cultural collection and features a range of aspects of interest. The most notable of these include the Yoruba Heritage Gallery, Interactive Gallery, Cycle of Life Gallery and the Old Dillard Heritage Gallery.
