Washington ShoppingMost shops in Washington are open seven days a week and public transport is never far away, meaning that shopping in different areas is both quick and easy, although many stores are within walking distance of each other. Washington DC is undergoing a gradual transformation with a selection of new boutiques, selling anything from high fashion to homewares, and top stores are opening throughout the city. These new shops are giving the city an energy and excitement, making this a fashionable and trendy place to shop.

Washington DC has a number of different districts and for the best of shopping, be prepared to travel beyond the Monumental Center. Downtown has long been home to numerous large department and chain stores, such as Banana Republic, and there are also a number of discount shops located nearby the Metro Center.


Shopping Districts

The Metro Center area tends to cater to the working professionals in Washington DC and many of the shops close shortly after the end of the working day, at around 17:00. Shops in this area include contemporary furniture outlets and specialty boutiques.

Dupont Circle is located in the popular Connecticut Avenue and is a haven for music and book lovers. There are also a number of unusual boutiques, restaurants and cafés in this part of the city.

The Adams Morgan district of Washington DC is arty and remains free from large chain-stores. Many independent shops and boutiques can be found in the Adams Morgan district, which gives this area a strong character. 18th Street around the junction with Columbia Road is a particularly good place to shop in this area.

Shaw in Washington DC is known for its excellent nightlife and numerous nightclubs, although during the day it is also a popular place to shop. This shopping district is best known for its vintage boutiques, antique shops, contemporary furniture shops and there is also a large, busy market.

Within easy walking distance from DC's two major universities, Foggy Bottom and nearby Georgetown have excellent shopping areas that cater to a wide people, both locals and tourists visiting Washington. Many of the city's finest antique stores are located in this area, along Wisconsin Avenue, which, together with M Street, is Georgetown's main stopping district.

The main attraction in Washington's Capital Hill is Eastern Market. This is an extensive indoor and outdoor market, with food, fine art and at the weekends, antiques, featuring the works of many local artists.

The Chevy Chase and Upper Wisconsin Avenue areas of Washington DC are fairly upmarket and there are a number of top fashion boutiques and shops, including Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. The state of Virginia is also home to a number of excellent boutiques and gift shops, particularly in the Old Town Alexandria area.

Situated close to the Pentagon City Metro station, Macy's is an enormous department store and sells a large amount of the latest fashions at typical department store prices. A Macy's store card allows you to get special discounts on your shopping.

Fashion Center at Pentagon City

Situated close to the Pentagon City Metro station, the Fashion Center at Pentagon City is a bright and extremely popular shopping mall in Washington DC, and is one of the most easy to reach. The mall is well designed and there are over 160 stores, which are easy to access.

The Shops at Georgetown Park

The 'Shops at Georgetown Park' mall is located close to Wisconsin Avenue and can be reached by the Georgetown Metro Connection Shuttle, from the Foggy Bottom Metro station.
