Full of character and real life, the busy markets at Washington DC certainly provide something more intimate than crowded shopping malls.

Residing within the Capitol Hill district, the Eastern Market stands in a 19th-century red-brick building on Seventh Street, where it is actually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Following severe fire damage in early 2007, the Eastern Market underwent two years of major reconstruction work, finally reopening in the summer of 2009.

Also of great note in Washington is the daily Maine Avenue Fish Market, which stands on the southwestern waterfront, close to Interstate I-395, and boasts freshly caught seafood sold on a series of floating barges, lining the pier. Although the Maine Avenue barges are here each day, the best selection of fish can be expected on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday.

Farmers' Markets

In the warmer months and sometimes throughout the year in warehouse enclosures, local farmers gathers at spots throughout Washington to sell their fruit and vegetables at popular farmers' markets. The produce is renowned for its excellent quality and is usually much cheaper than at the city's supermarkets.
