Whilst most of Boulder's galleries are of a commercial nature, there are a number of noteworthy museum-type venues with comprehensive art collections.

These include the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, where the works of artists from all over Colorado are exhibited. Other galleries of note include the Ken Bernstein Art Studio, and also the Leanin' Tree Museum and Sculpture Garden of Western Art, which proudly boasts one of the biggest collections of Western art in existence, welcoming literally thousands of visitors each year.

Enjoying a spacious warehouse setting and spread over two floors, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art is divided into three main galleries, each of which have something different to offer visitors. Local up-and-coming artists from all over Colorado are encouraged here, with a series of related events, exhibitions and cinema screenings. Various prints and trendy gifts are available for purchase at the gallery's gift shop, which completes the main attractions.

Ken Bernstein Art Studio

Those staying in the lively University Hill area of Boulder should check out the Ken Bernstein Art Studio, where a series of huge paintings depict scenes from Colorado's important industrial history, spanning some 150 years. The painting showing St. Peter's Church in Greeley is especially well known and locally acclaimed.

Leanin' Tree Museum and Sculpture Garden of Western Art

With a long history of more than 50 years, the very established Leanin' Tree Museum and Sculpture Garden of Western Art is one gallery not to miss and is easy to find, being situated on Longbow Drive, on the eastern side of the city. The museum contains a large and permanent collection of paintings, which has grown in both quantity and quality over the years.

MacLaren Markowitz Gallery

The MacLaren Markowitz Gallery is situated on the western side of the Pearl Street Mall and is home to an extensive collection of modern, eye-catching art works. Other highlights include wall hangings, ceramics and iron sculptures, amongst many other offerings.

Mary Williams Fine Arts

The Mary Williams Fine Arts is located in the city center and specializes in unusual antique prints and historical original paintings, dating from the 19th century onwards. You will also be able to find some interesting vintage movie posters here, as well of photographs with a Native American subject matter.

Located within the heart of downtown Boulder and on the famed Pearl Street Mall, the Middle Fish Gallery is the place to come if you are looking for modern art. As well as numerous large and brightly colored contemporary canvasses, Middle Fish also features a range of metal sculptures, mirrors, jewelry, pottery and glassworks.

The Roach Galleries can be found within the popular 28th Street Shopping District, where is has become popular with tourists look for gift ideas with a Bohemian flavor. Often of note are the unusual sand paintings and the large, patterned rugs. There is also a good selection of hand-made jewelry on offer here.

The Smith-Klein Gallery is located within downtown Boulder, where it has become well known for its creativity and variety.
