Located in the northeastern quadrant of Colorado state and within relatively close proximity to the metropolis of Denver, the city of Aurora sits within the counties of both Adams and Arapahoe. The far southeasterly side of the city also partly extends into neighboring Douglas county.

Aurora belongs to the spreading Denver Metropolitan Area, which boasts an impressive population now topping 2.5 million people. The city itself comprises in the region of 80 different neighborhoods, with some of the most significant of these including Beacon Point, Cross Creek, Eastridge, Hampton Hills, Havana Heights, Kingsborough, Meadowood, Mission Viejo, Saddle Rock, Stapleton, Smoky Ridge, Tollgate Village and Waters Edge.

Also very much of note in the city and clearly annotated on maps are the Buckley Air Force Base, the Fitzsimons Campus of the University of Colorado Denver, the former Lowry Air Force Base and the downtown district (sometimes referred to as the Fletcher townsite).

Getting around Aurora is unlikely to present any problems to visitors, with many choosing to walk around the city center.

The light rail transit network is on hand for longer distances, while those with a rental car can take advantage of Interstate I-25, which dissects the city into eastern and western regions, heading north towards Montbello Central Park and south to the Cherry Creek Reservoir.
