Aurora Landmarks and Monuments

(Aurora, Colorado - CO, USA)

Colorado history is suggested at a number of historical sites and landmarks peppered around the city of Aurora. These comprise old farm houses and structures, notable city buildings and various stately private residences.

The city of Aurora manages more than 25 different landmarks and sites of historical interest. Some of the oldest and most impressive include the Gully Homestead, which was built in the early 1870s by one Thomas Gully and was relocated to its present site on South Chambers Road in 1983.

Slightly more youthful is the Centennial House on Galena Street, where beautiful Queen Anne / Victorian-style architecture has its origins at the turn of the 1890s. The Centennial House was purchased by the city in 1990 and remains the oldest of the local houses built for famous real estate tycoon Donald Fletcher. In fact, Donald Fletcher actually founded this city, on the East Denver Plains, in 1891, and Aurora was named Fletcher for the first two decades of its life, before being renamed in the year 1907.

The Aurora Fox Theater and Arts Center is another of the city's historic landmarks and this former movie theater dates back to 1946, being extensively renovated and refurbished in the middle of the 1980s.

The city of Aurora has established its very own Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission, to fully recognise significant structures, protect its heritage and preserve its oldest, most important buildings for future generations to admire.
