Visitors to the city of Fresno should come expecting a 'semi-arid' climate, with a noticeably Mediterranean-type character. A warm spring is followed by a hot summer, pleasant autumns and relatively mild winter weather.

There are fairly low average precipitation levels expected throughout the year. January, February and March experience the highest average monthly rainfall, in the region of 5 cm / 2 inches, while July and August are the driest months, with virtually no rainy weather to speak of. Most other months see a rainfall in the region of 1.3 cm / 0.5 inches to 2.5 cm / 1 inch, or thereabouts.

Both December and January rank as the coldest months in Fresno city, although overnight frosts can be quite sporadic and infrequent. By day, temperatures tend to stay around 10°C / 50°F and often remain on the low side of double figures. It is worth noting that January can be quite a foggy and overcast month, due to the thick Tule fog from the Great Central Valley of California.

By the time that February makes its appearance, the climate is already beginning to warm up in a noticeable way. Temperatures start to reach 19°C / 66°F or 20°C / 68°F by the end of March and mid-20s in April, as the climate approaches the summer.

As the summer months are so dry and hot, irrigation is necessary for local agriculture to succeed. From June through September, daytime averages all hover above 30°C / 86°F, meaning that if you are planning a summer vacation in Fresno, you will need to pack light clothes.
