The list of 'Californian Historic Landmarks' is certainly a lengthy one and a number reside within the city of Fresno, such as the Industrial Works Free Speech Site, an old Japanese Detention Camp and even the city's Municipal Sanitary Landfill.

There are also some very attractive and characterful buildings spread around the city's neighborhoods of downtown, Huntington Boulevard, Old Fig Garden, Sunnyside, the Tower District, Woodward Park and West Side.

The neighborhood of West Side is often referred to as Southwest Fresno and is actually amongst the most historic parts of the city. Its diverse African, Asian and Mexican American communities mean that there is plenty of varied architectural interest in this part of the city, particularly around the Kearney Boulevard.

Founded in the year 1911 and located on North Maple Avenue, on the northern side of the city, the California State University, Fresno, comes with a spreading campus covering more than 130 hectares / 320 acres. The university now boasts over 22,000 students and a series of interesting attractions, such as its Beiden Field, Bulldog Stadium, Downing Planetarium, State Winery, Warmerdam Field and pleasant Tree Walk, which actually belongs to Fresno State's arboretum.


One of the most unusual and most photographed landmarks present within the city is without question the Old Fresno Water Tower, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places and was built in the early part of the 1890s. This American Romanesque-style water tower closed for business in the 1960s and in 2001, reopened as a quirky tourist information outlet.
