Fresno Events, Things to Do and Festivals 2014 / 2015
(Fresno, California - CA, USA)
The quality and quantity of the events staged in Fresno is certainly favorable, with many more annual festivals and things to do being found within neighboring
Monterey and
San Jose.
The
Tower District has become a particularly vibrant part of the city and as such, it regularly hosts a number of community festivities, car shows and events, many of which draw large crowds to this part of Fresno city. Always popular are the
Jamaica My Weekend celebrations each August, which include lots of live Caribbean-style music and are based around the grounds of the St. Therese Church.
Other notable festivals based within the Tower District include the
Grand Mardi Gras Parade at the end of February or the beginning of March, which is usually held on a Sunday. The parade itself begins just after lunch, at roughly 13:00, and winds its way along Olive Avenue towards Wishon Avenue. During the celebrations, many of the local restaurants serve up a real assortment of Cresol and Cajun themed dishes, such as jambalaya and gumbo.
Fresno Calendar of Festivals and Events 2014 / 2015
First held at the very start of the 1990s, the
Fresno Rainbow Pride event now takes place each year at the beginning of June and incorporates a gay pride parade through the Tower District. Also held in this part of the city is the
Taste and Toast of the Tower each May, where you can sample some of the best food that the
Central Valley can possibly offer.
The
Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center on M Street hosts many of the city's most noteworthy festivals and shows and is to be found on the southern side of the downtown core, close to the Amtrak station and a few blocks away from the City Hall. Opened in the middle of the 1960s and expanded in the 1980s and the 1990s, the city's convention center is able to accommodate seated audiences of over 9,000 people and comprises the
Ernest E. Valdez Hall, the
Exhibit Hall (which can be split into three separate halls), the
Selland Arena and the
William Saroyan Theater.
Concerts are regularly staged at the Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center, with past performances including bands and artists such as Metallica, Tom Petty and Van Halen, amongst others. In the Selland Arena, monster truck festivals and various sporting events are particular highlights, while at the Saroyan Theater, Broadway musicals, concerts by the
Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra and the summer
Miss California Pageant are all big draw cards.
