Many of the best art galleries in Mexico City are scattered around the Roma district and feature works by traditional, modernist and surrealist artists.

Particularly prominent in Mexico City is the National Art Museum (Museo Nacional de Arte) and also the Museum of Modern Art (Museo de Arte Moderno), with the neighbouring Paseo de la Reforma being known for its many sculptures. The beautiful Palacio de Bellas Artes is an imposing building located on the eastern side of the Alameda in downtown Mexico City and is known for its grand white-marble, Art Deco facade. Built at the very beginning of the 20th century and finally completed almost 30 years later, following considerable subsidence problems, this imposing arts centre features a number of huge murals by famous artists. Many outstanding paintings are also on display within the various gallery spaces and guided tours are available at the weekends.

Mexico City's Museo Nacional de Arte resembles a classical Italian Renaissance palace in appearance and houses historic collections from many different schools of Mexican Art. The National Art Museum is home to many outstanding sculptures and masterpieces, with the painting of the Valley of Mexico by José Maria Valaso being a firm favourite with visitors. Many constantly changing exhibits mean that there is always something new to see here.

The Museo Rufino Tamayo showcases many quality paintings by acknowledged artist Rufino Tamayo. Others on exhibit within the gallery are a number of pieces by famous modernist artists known the world over, such as Picasso, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.

Lovers of contemporary art works should pencil in a visit to this Museo de Arte Moderno, which can be found in the Polanco area of Mexico City. Paintings and sculptures by some of the country's leading 20th-century artists, such as Frida Kahlo and Francisco Toledo, are proudly exhibited here within four magnificent skylit rotundas. Other highlights include a sculpture garden, overlooked by the museum's coffee shop.

Very much a gallery for Mexico City's fringe art scene, the Museo José Luis Cuevas showcases many of the works by acclaimed Mexican modern artist Cuevas. Particularly eye catching is the bronze statue, which dominates the patio area and is around 9 metres / 30 feet high. Many visiting exhibitions showcase the works of local contemporary artists.

Museo Dolores Olmedo Patino

Standing within a charming 17th-century hacienda, the Museo Dolores Olmedo Patino contains one of the world's largest and most comprehensive collections of pieces by Diego Rivera. In total, the gallery boasts more than 30 different Rivera works, including both watercolour and oil paintings, along with historic lithographs. Folk art and paintings by Frida Kahlo are just some of the other highlights.

The Museo Nacional de San Carlos is where you will find a truly impressive collection of art from all around Europe, dating from between the 16th and 20th centuries. This art museum was found in 1968 and is situated in central Mexico City, in the former residence of the Conde de Buenavista. Renaissance, romantic and neo-classical paintings are all well represented here, with some of the best works by artists such as Ruens, Van Dyck and Landessio.
