Chiclayo Landmarks and Monuments

(Chiclayo, Lambayeque, Peru)

Cathedral pictureThe heart of Chiclayo is very much dominated by the Plaza de Armas, which remains amongst the city's most important and visited landmarks. A great place to stroll around on a sunny afternoon, the Plaza de Armas is a spacious public square, surrounded by places of interest, including a series of shops and cafes, along with Chiclayo's Mercado Central and its magnificent cathedral.

The Chiclayo Cathedral can be found presiding over the eastern side of the Plaza de Armas, where it is sandwiched between the streets of San Jose and Elias Aguirre. Standing here for more than 120 years, this religious landmark dates back to the latter part of the 19th century

The city's historical cathedral was not actually officially inaugurated until some years later after being built, in 1916. This therefore gives a very clear indication of the city's relative youth by Peruvian standards. The cathedral's facade is especially elegant, being pale yellow in colour and edged in white, with a series of columns, arches, stone statues and twin cupola-topped towers.
