Chimbote Shopping and Districts

(Chimbote, Ancash, Peru)

Picture of city centreThe shopping scene in Chimbote is more than adequate for most, and there are plenty of opportunities to purchase local Peruvian handicrafts, postcards and touristy souvenirs. Most shopping opportunities await in central Chimbote, being located around the Plaza de Armas and the nearby Mercado.

Local markets in Chimbote provide the perfect place to hone your haggling skills, and prices can often be negotiated by simply being friendly and trying your luck. Look out for locally made candles, woollen Chavin blankets, iron works, jewellery, embroidered skirts (polleras), leather bags, reed baskets, and Tarica ceramics, which are usually available throughout the Ancash Region of Peru.

When to Shop and Opening Hours

Most of the city's shops open from Monday to Saturday, between the hours of 09:00 and 18:00. Very few shops in Chimbote open on Sundays, and so this is always a very quiet time of the week.

Daily markets often open very early in the morning, particularly the famous local fish markets.
