Cienfuegos Art Galleries

(Cienfuegos, Cuba)

Although Cienfuegos may not be known for its abundance of art galleries, there are a number of interesting cultural attractions that fall into this category. The central Galeria de Arte de Cienfuegos is once such venue and offers a large collection of art works, created by local Cuban artists of varying backgrounds. Further galleries can be found scattered around the Paseo del Prado and in the nearby town of Trinidad, which is known for its rich Cuban cultural heritage.

Located within the Punta Gorda area of the city is the acclaimed open-air gallery - the Sculpture Park, which is better known to the local Cubans as the Parque de Esculturas and contains some very impressive sculptures. These art works are of a contemporary nature, often depicting animals in a rather abstract way, such as the playful 'Dragonfly' and the 'Rhinoceros' sculptures.

General Information

The Parque de Esculturas is located on the Paseo del Prado and is part of an existing cultural complex, with the art works having been constructed by using a variety of different hard-wearing materials, such as granite, concrete, wood and steel. All of the sculptures have been created by leading Cuban and Spanish artists, including the likes of Antonio Chaviano, Juan Garcia, Carlos Lugones, Carlos Valdivia, José Basulto and Camilo Villalvilla.

In total there are 13 different sculptures at the park, with intriguing titles such as 'The Holy Family' (La Sagrada Familia), 'Back in the Coastline' (Allá por el Litoral), 'From Earth' (De la Tierra) and 'Like Father Like Son' (De Tal Palo Tal Astilla).
