Aerial view ofthe cityscapeThe proud Costa Rican capital, San Jose is also the country's biggest city and resides within the very centre of the Gran Area Metropolitana (GAM), within the Central Valley area of northern Latin America. San Jose is a modern city and has a population of approximately 350,000 residents.

Surrounded by lush mountains and a number of scenic valleys, San Jose is home to Costa Rica's leading air facility, the Juan Santamaria International Airport. The city itself lies within the Central Valley (Meseta Central), with the downtown area being arranges as a gridwork of intersecting Calles (north to south) and Avenidas (east to west).


Maps and Orientation of the City

The area known simply as 'Central' marks the heart of San Jose city centre and stands between Calle 6 and Calle 9, being completely traffic-free and offering good shopping opportunities. Paseo Colon forms an important part of this area and lies directly west of the Calle 14.

Central San Jose is comprised of a number of different barrios (neighbourhoods), with the Barrio Amon being especially appealing and sited to the north-east of both Calle 1 and the Avenida 5. The Barrio Amon is filled with quality restaurants and a good choice of hotels. Located to the west of San Jose city centre is La Sabana, while the Rohrmoser suburb is to the north of La Sabana, and Escazu to the west. The student districts of San Pedro and Los Yoses are to be found south of central San Jose and known for their nightlife.

Maps of San Jose are always handy and available from various bookstores, such as Lehmann's on the Avenida Central, and nearby at the Libreria Universal, close to Calle 1. The tourist centre known as the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT) is another good place for maps and features outlets on the Plaza de a Cultura and the Correo Central.
