The wealth of hotels available within San Jose really do provide accommodation at both ends of the spectrum, ranging from the most basic of lodging to upscale, luxury with sumptuous hotel rooms and wonderful views. In general, the cheapest accommodation within San Jose tens to be based around the Coca-Cola bus terminal, although this is certainly not one of the city's safest districts in which to stay.

Booking ahead is advisable if you are looking for available hotels between December and April, which tends to be the high season in Costa Rica. Accommodation in San Jose quickly becomes booked up at this time, and also around Christmas and during the Easter celebrations of Semana Santa.

Where to Stay

If you would like to spend your time in one of the nicer parts of San Jose, then consider looking for hotels around La Sabana and the Barrio Amon. These appealing neighbourhoods are home to a wealth of hotels, which fall into both the mid-range and top-end lodging categories, although there are also a number of budget youth hostels in these parts of San Jose.

The affluent suburbs of Escazu, Los Yoses and San Pedro tend to offer accommodation is an especially peaceful area, and although these districts are outside of central San Jose, they are well connected by public transport. The suburb of Cariari is also known for its selection of hotels, which are well-placed for access to the city's Juan Santamaria International Airport and highly suited to business travellers, although a little pricey.
