Getting Around, Christ Church Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Christ Church, Barbados)

Barbados is a small place, and getting around is no problem at all. Nearby Bridgetown is considered the transportation portal with travel links to the outside world, but the truth is that the international airport is actually in Christ Church.

With a rental car or a tolerance for buses and taxis, you will have no problem arranging transport all over the island. Buses connect the majority of the main beaches and resorts around Barbados, while taxis are best suited to short trips within Christ Church, since they are more pricey.

The only airport on Barbados is right here in Christ Church, and it's the largest airport in this part of the Caribbean. This parish is a convenient place to stay if only for the airport access, especially for anyone with an early morning flight. Barbados-Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) has decent facilities, including restaurants, a bar and a glut of duty-free shops.

Car Rental

Car hire trumps all forms of transport in terms of convenience, especially considering the fact that this is a small island. You can drive from one side to the other in an hour or less. The catch is that mainstream rental firms aren't established in Barbados, and all vehicles are rented through private firms. Be very sure to ask about insurance and if you have the time, try to shop around.

Buses and Coaches

Buses can also be fairly convenient for getting around the island. Tourist-class coaches are roomy and air-conditioned. The fact that villages are close together means that passengers won't spend very much time in a seat. Bus transport is also extremely easy to use and inexpensive - a welcome relief on Barbados.

Trains

There are no trains on the island.

Taxis

A popular alternative to buses, taxis are a quick and convenient way to travel around the parish, albeit a little more expensive. Fares are supposed to be fixed by the government, but you will find that some taxi drivers would rather interpret the fares their own way. To avoid any undue surprises, make a point of settling the price before boarding.

Boats and Ferries

There aren't any ferries heading to and from Christ Church, or anywhere on Barbados, for that matter. However, there are plenty of local boats around, and it's possible to charter anything from a fishing trip to a cruise around the island. Check for local offerings at Bridgetown's busy harbour.
