Newport Shopping and Districts

(Newport, Gwent, South Wales, UK)

Picture of the High Street stationNewport city centre contains plenty of places to fill up your shopping bags and is home to an increasing number of well-known chains and department stores. Local shops and traders are also well represented around central Newport and offer a good alternative to the bigger names, with a number being housed within the Newport Victorian Arcade, the Cambrian Shopping Centre and also the Kingsway Shopping Centre on Emlyn Square.

Much of central Newport has been pedestrianised with a view to improve the overall shopping facilities. Whilst the shops in Newport don't exactly rival the shopping centre in the nearby city of Cardiff, they do offer everything that you could possibly need, and more besides. Of note, in 2011, carrier bag charges were introduced in shops throughout Wales.

Opening Hours

Most shops in the city of Newport are open between the hours of 09:00 to 17:30 or later, Monday through Saturday. However, Newport is actively encouraging Sunday shopping and each Sunday offers free car parking spaces close to the city centre, to entice potential shoppers. The Sunday shopping hours generally fall between 11:00 to 16:30 and most on the big-name department stores find it worthwhile to open on Sundays, together with many smaller shops and independent traders around the city centre.

Where to Shop

Various centrally located roads are lined with the best selection of shops, such as Bridge Street, Cambrian Road, High Street, Market Street, Queensway and in particular Commercial Street, where the relatively compact Victorian Newport Arcade is an interesting covered shopping centre, containing a number of small stores selling interesting gifts and souvenirs. Expect to find many high street favourites here, such as BHS, HMV, Marks & Spencer, Next, Primark and even a branch of Anne Summers.

Close to the railway station, the relatively compact Cambrian Shopping Centre contains a good selection of shops and is often referred to as the City Spires shopping centre. Sited next to the smaller Victorian Newport Arcade and destined for serious redevelopment, the Cambrian Shopping Centre will shortly be transformed into a £200 million shopping complex known as Friars Walk shopping mall, complete with the anchor store of Debenhams and also a multi-screen cinema complex.

Nearby, the Kingsway Shopping Centre has recently been updated and is currently the main indoor shopping mall in Newport, boasting plenty of fashion boutiques and other stores, housed over several floors. Newport's Kingsway Shopping Centre can be accessed from John Frost Square precinct and is also home to both the city's museum and also its central library.
