Lucerne Shopping and Districts

(Lucerne, Switzerland)

Photo of the Chapel Bridge and nearby shopsFrom Rolex watches to flea markets, the shopping scene in Lucerne is varied to say the least. For some of the most colourful and interesting shopping, check out the market stalls along the river quays, which appear on Tuesday and Saturday mornings and sell a range of local produce from all over Lucerne and this region of Switzerland.

For more general bric-a-brac and gift ideas, check out the shopping at the Saturday flea market along the Burgerstrasse and Reusssteg, next to the River Reuss, which runs from May to October. However, if you are feeling a little flush and looking for the ultimate souvenir to remember your stay in Lucerne, then check out the Rolex watch factory next to the lake, which features the world's biggest Rolex shop and many quality watches.

Where to Shop

Many shopping arcades in Lucerne face directly on to the River Reuss and offer extremely pleasant surroundings and views. A range of shops are based close to the Town Hall and around the Corne Market, and also along the Rathausgasse, where stores selling local Swiss handicrafts are especially plentiful.

Many people choose to leave Lucerne with some classic Swiss chocolate, or even a wooden cuckoo clock, while others prefer shopping for jewellery, clothing and even musical boxes, which are often cheaper than they first appear, since it is usually possible to reclaim the tax. Be sure to check out the shopping scene around the Schwanenplatz and Lowenplatz, where Lucerne's famous Gubelin watchmaker and Bucherer antique store are to be found.
