Girona Weather, When to Go and Climate Information

Girona has Mediterranean-style weather, with lots of bright sunny days throughout the year. The city also enjoys mild temperatures all year round and not too much rain. It is little wonder then that this part of Catalonia is so popular with tourists, who come in search of hot summer days or mild winter months.

Visitors should bear in mind that on the nearby coastline of the Costa Brava, temperatures can be even warmer, although the heat is countered to some extent by cooling sea breezes.

The best of the spring weather in Girona arrives from May onwards. Temperatures really start to warm up and the nearby beaches soon come to life once again as tourists arrive in search of sun and sea.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

Summers are characteristically hot in the city of Girona. During July and August, temperatures in the city can even reach an uncomfortable 40°C / 104°F, although this sort of extreme weather is classified as rather unusual. Out of the city itself, on the nearby Costa Brava, sea breezes offer a welcome respite from the intensity of the sun. September temperatures might be slightly cooler, but the weather is still pleasant and there is also the added advantage of fewer tourists.

Although temperatures can stay as high as 21°C / 70°F in October, in autumn, the weather does start to get generally cooler. Sunny days are by no means guaranteed at this time of the year and there may be some rain.

In wintertime, Girona enjoys relatively mild temperatures. It has been known to drop as low as freezing, but this doesn't happen very often and most of the time, temperatures average at around 10°C / 50°F. In terms of deciding what clothes to pack, a light sweater and a mid-weight jacket should suffice. It may be cooler in winter, but visitors can still look forward to more sunny days than rainy ones.
