Girona Neighbourhoods, Locations and Districts

(Girona, Catalonia, Spain)

The Spanish city of Girona is situated in north-eastern Spain, in a region named Catalonia. It is popularly known as the 'City of the Four Rivers', because it is here that the rivers Ter, Onyar, Galligants and Guell meet.

Girona is a city of many parts. As well as having a thriving modern district, it boasts fine historic medieval and Jewish districts. A guided walk through the city's winding, cobbled streets gives visitors an opportunity to soak up the historic atmosphere of the city.

Stopping off at one of the many cafes and restaurants also gives visitors a chance to appreciate the fact that, compared with other Spanish cities, Girona offers a remarkably relaxed pace of life.

Jewish Quarter

Girona's Jewish Quarter - or 'Call', as it is also known - is one of the highlights of the city. Located within the City Walls, it is essentially a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and cobbled streets, interspersed with courtyards. The area has a distinctly medieval feel. In fact, it is widely considered to be one of the best preserved historic districts in Europe. During Roman times, the Carrer de la Forca (Calle de la Forca) was where most of the city's trade took place. Today, it is still one of the busiest streets in Girona.

Old Quarter

A stroll around the Casc Antic, or the Old Quarter of Girona, gives visitors a good idea of the enduring nature of the city. Its grey stoned buildings embody a real sense of the history of the place. At the heart of this historic neighbourhood is the city's cathedral.

New Town

West of the River Onyar is the New Town neighbourhood of Girona. This more modern area of the city has a certain appeal, including wide streets, some rather beautiful squares and, of course, the Parc de la Devesa, which is the city's largest green space.
