Avila Hotels and Accommodation

(Avila, Castilla y León, Spain)

Avila is a small Spanish city with great character, and many of its hotels are attractive historical buildings in their own right. The choice of accommodation in Avila is quite reasonable and falls into several different categories, namely pensiones (boarding houses) and hostales (hostels).

Lodging rates tend to peak during the busy summer months, when tourists flock to Avila to marvel at the famous medieval City Walls. Visitors on a tight budget will find that much of the city's accommodation is competitively priced, with weekend packages and discounts often being available. There is also a popular camp site (Camping Sonsoles) located on the southerly outskirts, along the highway N403 to Toledo, which may well be of interest.

Especially noteworthy in Avila is the 14th-century Palacio de Valderrabanos Hotel on the Plaza de la Catedral, which was originally a historic bishop's palace and today comes with some 76 guest rooms, spread over three floors. Close by is the somewhat larger GSM Hotel Palacio de Los Velada, which also resides on the Plaza de la Catedral and alongside the Avila Cathedral, and is known for its impressive architecture and plush rooms. Just a relatively short walk away is St. Vincent's Basilica, which is well worth a look.

Also popular is the accommodation on offer at the Hospederia de la Sinagoga on the Reyes Catolicos, which enjoys a central location and has been built upon the site of an old synagogue. Standing just outside of Avila city centre is the Sercotel Cuatro Postes on the Auda de Salamanca, which is to be found alongside the intriguing Roman monument better known as the 'Cuatro Postes'.
