For many visitors to Oslo, the city's huge selection of museums is a definite high point. With such a large range of different themes and topics available, the many museums in Oslo will be sure to appeal to most tastes, with history buffs appreciating the detailed exhibits at the Norwegian Folk Museum (Norsk Folkemuseet) and also the Oslo History Museum (Oslo Bymuseet), situated in Frognerparken and spanning some 1,000 years of Norway's past.

Many tourists enjoy visiting the Film Museum (Filmmuseet), which is located in central Oslo within the House of Film (Filmens), close to the Karl Johans Gate. This popular attraction offers a host of information about the thriving Norwegian film industry and also the history of the cinematic screen.


A number of notable museums are to be found within Oslo's beautiful Botanic Gardens, such as the Natural History Museum (Paleontologisk Museet) and also the Botanic University Museum (Botanisk Hage og Museum), the Museum of Zoology (Zoologisk Museet) and also the ever popular Natural History Museum (Paleontologisk Museet). Here you can enjoy a series of well-preserved fossils, including an enormous skeleton of an Iguanodon dinosaur, which stands proudly by the entrance.

Those interested in Oslo's strong Viking connections must not miss a trip to the impressive Viking Ship Museum (Vikingskiphuset). With a wealth of Viking artefacts and no less than three restored Viking ships, such as the Gokstadship and Oseberg, this is a must see for anyone interested in the city's rich Norse past. A gift shop selling postcards, books and Viking themed souvenirs completes the main attractions.
