Sardinia Shopping and Districts

(Sardinia, Italy)

View of the Santa Teresa di Gallura market, where coral jewellery makes a popular souvenirSardinia is big on handicrafts and souvenirs, although shopping options are tame by Italian standards. In fact, it's all fairly low-key even in the larger cities and main tourist areas, but this is in keeping with Sardinia's persona. Think markets and small shop-houses.

Sardinian handicrafts are the main buys and you can pick up some fantastic souvenirs here. Genuine, original items found on the island are produced nowhere else in the world and include artistic pottery, woven baskets and wood carvings.

When to Shop and Where

Even if you're not buying, Sardinia's markets are good for getting into the bustle and people-watching. They're also good for seafood - recommended are the Mercato San Benedetto in Cagliari, and Sassari's and Nuoro's Mercato Civiles.

The focus on a particular craft will vary from region to region, and Castelsardo (near Sassari) is especially known for its willow baskets.

Ceramics are particularly hot on Sardinia, with household items being churned out on the island for thousands of years. Jugs, flasks and tiles are popular and are often painted in blue and white, somewhat Greek in feel.

On metals, silver is king and has been used by Sardinian precious metal smiths for eons. Items featuring gold and semi-precious stones are also good buys, while copperware and fashion jewellery is best had in Isili.
