Heidelberg is an appealing tourist destination throughout the year, although most people choose to visit the city during the summer months, between May and September, when the region's climate is at its most favourable. However, even Heidelberg's hottest months of July and August can experience rainy weather and heavy showers at times, so when you pack your suitcase, do bear this in mind.

Even in the winter months, the weather in Heidelberg is rarely extreme, with only light overnight frosts in December, January and February, followed by noticeably warmer weather from March onwards. By the time that April has arrived, the days are beginning to get longer and the overall climate and temperatures regularly rise to 16°C / 61°F on the best days.

One of the warmest cities within the Baden-Wüttemberg area of Germany, Heidelberg has plenty to offer, regardless of the weather. However, the summer months are packed with outdoor activities, events and concerts, with many locals enjoy the balmy evenings and choose to stay out late, particularly at the end of the week.

The summer climate can be quite random at times, with each day being slightly unpredictable, although you can be sure to expect highs of between 22°C / 72°F and 30°C / 86°F during both July and August, Heidelberg's hottest and also wettest months. However, don't be put off by the summer rainfall, as the showers rarely spoil the day or dampen your spirits.

Also popular times to visit Heidelberg, are both the spring and autumn seasons when the climate is equally appealing and fine weather, clear blue skies and warm days are fairly predictable for much of this period. If you choose to visit the city at these times, you can also take advantage of the slightly cheaper hotel rates and less crowded attractions.
