Those with a passion for textiles will be at home in the late Max Berk's Textile Museum, while the University Museum (Universitätsmuseum) is of special local interest, celebrating Heidelberg's famous and historic university campus.

If you are lucky enough to visit Heidelberg during the month of March, the 'Long Night of the Museums' is worth looking out for, where the city's many museums and similar venues stay open all night long, until as late as 03:00 in the morning, hosting live events and celebrations.

Celebrating the history of alchemy and chemistry, the German Pharmaceutical Museum is part of Heidelberg Castle (Schloss) and is full of scientific memorabilia. Particularly noteworthy is the Robert Bunsen memorial, which remembers the life and works of the man who invented the much-used Bunsen burner, while other exhibits include various drugs and herbs, a laboratory, and many original pharmaceutical artefacts, dating back as far as the 17th century.

Textile Museum (Textilmuseum Max Berk)

The city of Heidelberg has a long history of textile production, with textile producer Max Berk being responsible for the establishment of this privately funded museum in 1978. Housed in what was formerly a church, the Textile Museum is divided into various sections, displaying items such as clothing items and accessories from around the world. Detailing production methods, and the machinery and fibres used in the making of the textiles on display, adds an educational aspect to this interesting museum.

Part of the university complex, the city's interesting University Museum pays tribute to the history of Germany's oldest university, the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg, which was established more than 600 years ago. The museum features three main themed rooms, where visitors can learn more about this impressive educational institution.

An unusual museum where the development of packaging and design is documented, the German Packing Museum is easy to find and stands in the heart of Heidelberg city centre. Housed within a former church building, the museum also features displays relating to city life through the years, with many exhibits of local significance.
