When to Shop and Opening Hours

In recent years, the shopping hours of Heidelberg and Germany as a whole have become rather more relaxed. Many shops around the city now remain open until as late as 20:00 Monday through Saturday, although specific hours do vary, with smaller local shops often choosing to close earlier and may also take a long break at lunchtime. Most shops are not allowed to open on Sundays, although some local bakeries do open early in the morning.

Where to Shop

Amongst the best shopping in Heidelberg, the Hauptstrasse is an appealing, pedestrianised precinct and home to many high-street names and major stores. The Hauptstrasse stretches for around 1 km / 0.6 miles and will be sure to provide a particularly memorable shopping experience, with fashion boutiques, gift shops, local speciality stores and more.

Further shopping can be found along the winding side streets of Heidelberg's Old Quarter, with shops being particularly plentiful along the Untere Strasse and also around the Heiliggeistkirche church. Ranging from antiques stores and art galleries, to jewellery and clothing outlets, many affordable and quirky souvenirs are on offer in this part of the city.
