Photo of bridges crossing the River WearAs with the whole of England, the climate in Sunderland can be rather variable at times, if not a little on the random side. It has certainly been known to rain heavily in the summer, although in general, the summer weather in Sunderland is quite dry and sunny, with the occasional heatwave and Indian summer.

Much of northern England is protected by the Pennine mountains, which serve as something of a rain shadow and therefore reduce the overall amount of precipitation experienced in the region.
