Whilst it might be handy to have a car to travel around the local area, it is possible to explore much of Cheshire using affordable public transport.

Options include regular train and bus services, with popular destinations and possible day trips from Chester being Ellesmere Port to the north, as well as the Wirral Peninsula to the north-west. Buses and trains often head in a westerly direction towards the northern part of Wales, where you can travel to the Welsh county of Flintshire in roughly 20 minutes or thereabouts.

Many of Chester's most popular attractions can be found in the city centre, within the Walls. They can be accessed quite easily on foot and indeed walking around is a particularly pleasant way to get to know the city, especially when the sun is shining during the summer months.

The nearest international airport is Manchester International. By car, the journey from the airport to Chester takes around 40 minutes. That said, it is best to allow extra travelling time in periods when traffic is particularly busy. Manchester Airport provides train services to Chester via Manchester Piccadilly. A National Express coach service is also available between Chester city centre and the airport.

Also nearby is Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The airport is served by a National Express coach transport service, while Chester can also be easily reached by car from the airport.

Car Rental

Chester is well placed for car travel to other towns and cities in the North-West of England and beyond. Several motorways can be accessed nearby, including the M6, M56 and the M53.

Cars can be hired from airports at Manchester and Liverpool, as well as from agencies in Chester itself and larger towns in Cheshire.

Buses and Coaches

UK Buses arrive and depart from Chester Bus Station, which is located in Princess Street, behind the Town Hall. Local services run within the city itself and from Chester to such towns as Crewe, Nantwich, Connah's Quay and Holywell.

A Park and Ride service runs frequently into the city centre from the outlying districts of Boughton Heath, Sealand Road, Upton and Wrexham Road. Whilst car parking is free, a charge is made for the return bus fare.

Chester has its own city centre shuttle bus transport, which departs from the city's railway station on weekdays and Saturdays. A small charge is now made for this service. A bus link also operates from the city's Railway Station to Chester Zoo.

National Express services travel from Chester to other towns and cities in the UK, including Newcastle, Manchester and Liverpool. These coach services operate from Chester Bus Station.

Trains

One of the best ways to travel into Chester is by train. The Railway Station is handily located in the city centre. A variety of train companies pass through this station.

The Arriva Trains Wales company operates trains to Llandudno, Holyhead, Wrexham, Shrewsbury, Manchester Piccadilly and Cardiff Central. A number of other train services also run, including one offered by Merseyrail Electric to Liverpool Central via Birkenhead.

Train services between Chester's railway station and London only take around two hours. Run by Virgin Trains, they travel via the nearby rail hub of Crewe.

Taxis

Numerous taxi companies operate in Chester, offering five- to seven-seat transport. A taxi rank can be found at the Railway Station.
