Split Hotels and Accommodation

(Split, Central Dalmatia, Croatia)

Although Split was not previously regarded as a hot tourist destination, and thus used to have just a small range of hotels on offer, today is quite different and there is now a wealth of accommodation. People often use Split as a convenient gateway to the Dalmatian coast proper and then head out to popular beach destinations.

There is a huge range of accommodation in Split and lodging goes from cheap hostels and bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) near the bus and train stations, to four-star chain hotels overlooking the harbour. The best spot to be is near the Old Town - around the Riva promenade, overlooking the harbour. However, it should be noted that decent budget accommodation is not always easy to find in the city.

Where to Stay

Split is quite compact and the newer part of the city and the harbour are both close-knit with the Old Town, where the main attractions reside. The bad news is that accommodation is relatively expensive here and you need to book way ahead to secure a room during the high season.

Many of the older hotels in Split have undergone, or are undergoing, renovation work to turn them in boutique-style places. This is a general theme throughout the centre and you have to go a bit further out to get cheaper rooms. Anywhere with a view of the harbour or right onto the Old Town is going to be quite pricey.

There are several hostels in Split, near the bus station - as well as a wide variety of private accommodation where you can have a single room with a shared bath. Free spirits may be able to just turn up and haggle for a room in this instance.

The top-end of the market includes luxury hotels like Le Meridien (within the suburb of Podstrana), offering resort-like status, although the norm is more boutique-style.
