Split Beaches and Water Sports

(Split, Central Dalmatia, Croatia)

Although there are no beaches based in Split as such, there are a number of appealing sandy stretches relatively close by. The closest of these offerings is Bacvice Beach, which is accessible by simply following the waterfront and comes with showers, changing rooms and bars.

Due to its proximity to Split, Bacvice Beach can become extremely busy at peak times, so it is best to head north to the beaches there, or to the westerly Kasjuni Cove (just over 1 km / 0.5 miles away). Better still is the island of Brac, which has a fantastic coastline, while Hvar Island is another favourite and comes with trendy cafés and restaurants.

General Information

Just over an hour to the south of Split, Brac Island is well connected by regular ferries and has a choice of tempting beaches. A real highlight is the charming old town of Bol, where the Zlatni Rat Beach serves as something of a magnet for tourists and is amongst the best in Dalmatia.

Zlatni Rat stretches for approximately 500 metres / 1,640 feet and comprises smooth pale pebbles. Windsurfing is a popular water sport here, while windswept pine trees and tall cliffs provide shelter and shade for sunbathers soaking up the Croatian rays.

Located on the western side of Bol, Potocine Beach is a better spot for windsurfing, with optimum conditions from late May to early June, and again from late July to early August. Scuba diving is possible around Potocine, with coral reefs and an underwater cave.

Whatever beach you choose to head to around Split, you may like to join in a game of 'picigin' This traditional Dalmatian sport involves standing in the sea and passing a ball to other players at high-speed, hitting it with your hand. You lose if you let the ball touch the water's surface. The rules can vary slightly from region to region, but you can be assured of fun and lots of splashing.
