The roof made of gold on the Herzog Friedrich Strasse
When you walk around the Old Town area of Innsbruck you will soon find one of the city's most famous tourist sights, the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof). It has over 2,500 individual gilded copper tiles which always seem to shimmer when the sun comes out. It looks lovely and is always the subject of many a keen photographer, trying to capture the shimmer on camera. This balcony roof was built around 1500 by the order of Emperor Maximilian I and he decided to show off his wealth by covering them in gold, but it ended up costing so much that he actually became broke!

Ancient residents by the Inn River
There is some proof that Innsbruck had an ancient settlement here during the Stone Age, over 6,000 years ago. Also around 4,000 years ago people from the Bronze Age lived here, particularly around Hotting and the Bergisel Hill. Innsbruck is situated at the crossroads once used by the Romans, so you really can see that the city really is steeped in all sorts of history.
