Others may prefer to sightsee onboard the city's hop-on, hop-off Sightseer bus, which passes countless tourist attractions en route, such as the Alpine Zoo (Alpenzoo) and the Triumphal Arch (Triumphpforte), and departs every 30 minutes between the hours of 09:00 and 17:00, from the Hauptbahnhof.

Skiing

The region surrounding the city features some of the very best skiing attractions that Austria has to offer. Many tourists flock to the city during the snowy, winter months, to enjoy the world-class skiing at the doorstep of Innsbruck. One-day skiing passes are extremely inexpensive and ski equipment rental too is quite affordable, and if you have purchased the Club Innsbruck Card, then you will be able to use the ski buses completely free of charge. Worth noting, it is actually possible to ski and snowboard throughout the year at the nearby Stubai Glacier, which is just over one hour away by bus.

Families always enjoy a day out at the Innsbruck Alpenzoo (Alpine Zoo), which is actually the highest zoo in the whole of Europe and stands at more than 700 metres / 2,297 feet above the sea level. The Alpenzoo is home to a large collection of Alpine creatures, with these animal attractions covering over 2,000 different species and including bears, bison, eagles, ibexes, otters and bearded vultures. To reach the Alpenzoo, you can either climb the hill or alternatively take a trip onboard the Hungerburgbahn train. If you purchase your ticket to the zoo directly from the Hungerburgbahn station, your journey will be free of charge.

Located in the grounds of the University of Graz and within the Hötting district, the Botanischer Garten (Botanical Gardens) date back around 100 years. These beautifully landscaped Alpine gardens contain literally thousands of different plants, ranging from edelweiss to thrift. Some of these plant species are endangered and quite precious, and originate from mountains the world over. Also of interest at the Botanical Gardens are the exotic flowers and similar attractions housed within the tropical glasshouses.

One of Austria's biggest leisure attractions, the OlympiaWorld Innsbruck welcomes all ages and abilities. This huge sports complex also comprises the Tivoli Neu Stadium, where soccer matches regularly take place in front of up to 30,000 spectators. The figure skating, speed skating and even ice hockey often take place in the Olympia Hall's Tiroler Wasserkraft Ice Arena. OlympiaWorld also doubles as a convention and entertainment centre, and regularly hosts trade events, concerts and various seasonal celebrations.

Tourists taking a stroll around the Old Town district of Innsbruck should take a look at this glorious medieval tower. The Stadtturm was built in the mid-15th century and this tall belltower adjoins the Old Town Hall (Rathaus), standing almost 60 metres / 197 feet high.

Take the time to ascend the steps to the very top and enjoy some breathtaking views of the Innsbruck cityscape and attractions below, along with the distant Nordkette mountains.

An iconic tourist attraction and regularly photographed by many visitors to Innsbruck, the Triumphpforte literally translates as 'Triumphal Arch' and stands at the southern end of the Maria Theresien Strasse. The Triumphpforte has a distinctly Italian appearance and was commission by Empress Maria Theresia on the event of her son's marriage. One side of the Triumphal Arch marks this happy event with a series of detailed marble reliefs, while the other side mourns the sudden passing of her husband Emperor Franz Stephan, who actually died during the wedding celebrations.
