Graz Restaurants and Dining

(Graz, Austria)

Photo of the centrally located HauptplatzMany of the restaurants in Graz have chosen to specialise in traditional Austrian and Styrian cuisine, which has the appearance of being quite light and healthy. Those dining out in Graz can expect to encounter freshly prepared green salads tossed in locally made pumpkin seed oil, along with lots of polenta and buckwheat pancakes, which are known locally as 'Heidensterz'.

The city's Austrian restaurants and eateries also regularly feature many freshwater fish-based dishes and pan-grilled (Pfand'l) specialities. Most people choose to eat around Old Town Graz, where the dining opportunities and cafes are at their most plentiful.

Where to Eat

Located in the very heart of the historic Old Town, both the Mehlplatz and the Färberplatz are good places to start looking for suitable restaurants to meet your needs. The Hauptplatz and adjacent Calf's Quarter are also worth a look and with strong food smells wafting out of the restaurant doors, it is almost possible to follow your nose in this part of the city.

Head over the River Mur and you will find yourself in the Lend district, where a further selection of good dining venues reside. Always popular in Graz is the highly acclaimed Schlossberg Restaurant, which resides on the Schlossberg and is reputed to be one of the very best options that the city has to offer, with a formal interior, a cheap self-service area and al fresco dining in the beer garden.
