One of the most popular of all the many family attractions in Salzburg, Hellbrunn Zoo (Tiergarten) is located on the southern side of the Schlosspark Hellbrunn and visited each year by many thousands of tourists.

On a sunny day, take a stroll around the Waagplatz and explore the plentiful tourist attractions lining its adjoining streets and passages, or enjoy an afternoon in the pleasant surroundings of the Folk Garden (Volksgarten), which is to be found alongside the banks of the River Salzach. For the best views of Salzburg, why not take a cable car ride to the very top of Mount Untersberg?

Mount Untersberg

Mount Untersberg dominates the city and provides a scenic backdrop to many views, being the tallest peak in the area. At over 1,800 metres / 6,900 feet in height, those who follow the long and steep pathways to the very top will be greeted with some extraordinary views of the Salzburg cityscape below, stretching as far as the Austrian Alps. Alternatively, Mount Untersberg's peak and Alpine Station can be reached by using the scenic cable railway for just a nominal charge.

The Mönchsbergaufzug is an interesting and unusual attraction in the Old Town area of Salzburg. This lift transports passengers to the very top of the Mount Mönchsberg in a matter of seconds, where the Alpine attractions, fresh mountain air and scenic views are well worth experiencing, along with the much-visited Hohensalzburg Fortress. Return tickets are available, should you not wish to walk down the mountain. Interestingly, the Mönchsberg Lift actually dates back to the latter part of the 19th century, although it has changed greatly over the years. A funicular railway (FestungsBahn) is also on hand to transport passengers up the Mönchsberg.

An established brewery and amongst the biggest of its kind in the whole of Austria, Stiegl's Brauwelt is filled with interesting beer-related attractions and historical equipment, charting the development of the country's brewing industry. Of course, no trip to Stiegl's Brewery World would really be complete without actually sampling the produce, with two glasses of fresh Austrian beer being included in the price.

The Tiergarten Hellbrunn, often referred to as Salzburg Zoo, is home to many exotic and colourful creatures, who appear to enjoy their spacious habitats and landscaped enclosures. Particularly popular at Hellbrunn Zoo are the big cats and the vast African Savannah, where you can observe everything from rhinos to antelopes. Feeding times are worth looking out for and very entertaining, while many are interested to learn more about how the zoo actively rescues circus animals.

Those visiting the city and in need of a little respite should search out the extremely tranquil and beautiful Volksgarten, a landscape garden situated in the very heart of Salzburg. The Folk Garden enjoys a scenic setting and boasts many seating areas, shaded from the summer sunshine by large trees. Other attractions include a pond and fountain, seasonal flowers, large lawns and endless opportunities for a picnic or two.

The Waagplatz is often of great interest to visiting tourists and is actually the city's most historic of all its market places. Sandwiched by both the Mozartplatz and the Judengasse, the Waagplatz is surrounded by a number of attractive buildings and is just a stone's throw from some great shops, cafes and churches, which line the interconnecting passageways. A number of interesting attractions are close by, including St. Michael's Church (Michaelskirche).
