Photo of town centre shopsThe fashionable Alpine township of Wanaka is well laid out, allowing visitors to easily access the main hotels, places of interest and shopping areas. Wanaka enjoys long shopping hours seven days a week, with local stores tending to sell everything from New Zealand outdoor adventure gear and tramping (hiking) equipment, to shoes, funky clothing and fashion accessories.

Being located next to Cardrona and Treble Cone, and therefore rather famous on the South Island as a leading winter destination, those shopping in Wanaka will also find a selection of shops specialising in skiing gear and related clothing. Ski equipment and snowboards can be either purchased or rented here during the winter months.

Where to Shop

Something of a Mecca for lovers of the great outdoors, Wanaka has become a leading resort for those with an interest in adventure pursuits, offering white-water rafting, mountain biking, trout fishing and sailing. Shops all over town make the very most of this lucrative market, and therefore virtually any kind of outdoor gear can be found here, for a price.

Central Wanaka is home to a good, modern supermarket and grocery store, suiting those wishing to self-cater or plan a picnic. Tourists shopping for souvenirs often favour locally produced ceramics and woodworks, as well as paintings created by New Zealand artists and these are often showcased at a number of small art galleries and cafes.
