Currency

Currency in Auckland and New Zealand as a whole is decimal, based on dollar and cent denominations. New Zealand dollars (NZD) come in notes to the value of $5, $10, $50 and $100 and there are also 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins. Transactions in Auckland involving 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 or 9 cents are either rounded up or down to the nearest multiple of 5 cents.

There is no limitation on the amount of money that you are allowed to bring in and out of New Zealand dollars can be exchanged for any foreign currency using the current exchange rate at the time.

All major credit cards are accepted throughout Auckland, including American Express, Bankcard, MasterCard, Visa and Diners Club. This also applies to Travellers' Cheques and most banks will be happy to give a cash advance on credit cards.

Smoking

Restaurants and cafés in Auckland operate a strict 'no smoking' policy and offices, businesses and corporations are generally 'non-smoking'. Many locals are strongly anti-smoking, so it is sensible to only smoke in Auckland when in the company of like-minded people.

Banks in Auckland are open from Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 16:30 and overseas exchange facilities are also available at Auckland Airport (AKL). ATM cashpoint machines can be found all around the city centre, offering an extremely convenient and popular way to exchange currency.

Shops and other businesses generally open Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:30. Shops in Auckland also open on Saturdays, from 09:00 to around 12:30 or later, and an increasing number of stores are now beginning to open on Sunday, particularly in the very centre Auckland.
