Welcoming a huge quantity of tourists each year, Cairns is to be found within Far North Queensland, on the easterly shoreline of the Cape York Peninsula and close to both the Dinden Forest Reserve and Glen Boughton.

By road, Brisbane is located just less than 1,700 km / 1,056 miles to the south, while Sydney resides even further south, being approximately 2,400 km / 1,491 miles from Cairns. Much closer to home is the Great Barrier Reef, which is easily reached in under an hour by boat and serves as a major tourist magnet for the entire region. Other popular destinations close by include the Atherton Tableland and the Daintree National Park, along with the Cape York Peninsula itself.

The city's Central Business District (CBD) is situated between Mcleod Street and the Esplanade, and Aplin Street and Wharf Street. Lying on the southern side of central Cairns is Trinity Wharf, where the transit centre is based. Each day, large numbers of long-distance buses arrive and depart here, while local buses (Sunbus) are based at the Lake Street Transit Centre.
