Cairns Art Galleries
(Cairns, Far North Queensland - QLD, Australia)
There are a number of art galleries dotted around central Cairns and its shopping centres. This allows tourists to easily purchase the ultimate holiday souvenir - an Aboriginal sculpture, a painting of the coastline, or perhaps an underwater photograph of the brightly coloured coral and marine creatures living on the
Great Barrier Reef.
There are several galleries that certainly stands out in the city, with the Cairns Regional Gallery being home to a wealth indigenous art, displayed within a beautiful heritage building. For something a little more modern, check out the nearby KickArts Centre of Contemporary Arts, which has grown to become one of the leading contemporary art galleries in Queensland and is partnered with the Just Us Theatre Ensemble (JUTE).
Also of note is the Tanks Art Centre, where local Australian artists are promoted and many temporary exhibitions are staged, as well as live music events and performances of traditional dancing.
Tourists visiting the city at the end of August should look out for the annual Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF), which takes place at all of the main art galleries and studios, and attracts more than 10,000 people.
